Enrico Onofri is an artist whose multifaceted career has taken him over the years to principal or associate conductor positions in five orchestras in five different countries, as well as a large number of invitations as guest conductor or conductor in residence. Conductor, violinist, teacher, grown up in his parents’ antiquarian atelier in Ravenna and surrounded by the beauty of the past since the beginning of his musical studies, Enrico has developed hence a deep passion for historical performances, exploring the repertoire from the 17th to the 20th century: in this way, he created a personal language through his knowledge of the ancient practices, intended as extraordinary sources of inspiration for new ideas and interpretative panoramas. Enrico thus continues to develop new connections, conducting and performing programmes ranging from the 17th century to contemporary music.
Principal conductor of the Filarmonica Toscanini in Parma, associate conductor of the Münchener Kammerorchester and the Orchestre National d’Auvergne, conductor and artistic partner of the Haydn Philharmonie, music director of the Real Câmara Baroque Orchestra in Lisbon, he was concertmaster and soloist from 1986 to 2010 of the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, after his beginnings alongside Jordi Savall and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In 2002 he began his conducting career with symphony, chamber and historical orchestras, including the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, the Camerata Bern, the Bochumer Symphoniker, the Festival Strings of Lucerne, the Kammerorchester Basel, the Tafelmusik Toronto, the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla, the Orchestra dell’Opéra de Lyon, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia, the Orchestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, the Real Filharmonia de Galicia, the Riga Sinfonietta, ecc., and the Academia Montis Regalis, of which he was principal conductor until 2022. He is also the founder and director of Imaginarium Ensemble, devoted to the Baroque repertoire on historical instruments, with which he performs as a soloist. Enrico has been the recipient of numerous prestigious recording awards, as well as the 2019 Abbiati Prize as best soloist of the year.
