In 1543 architect Nanni Unghero built Parlascio Bastion, a pentagon-shaped bulwark that has lived a thousand different lives: during the Second World War it was used as ant anti-air raid shelter and over the years, it has even been a mechanic’s workshop. In the 16th century Parlascio Gate, once the main entry point in the northern side of the walls became the entrance to the fortress, whilst the main road axis from Ponte di Mezzo, was diverted towards the new Porta a Lucca gate that opened in 1544.
